The River

“Some will fall and some will rise…”

At some point in my teens, I had this feeling that no matter what happened, my life was going to turn out the way that I wanted.  I thought to myself, “don’t worry about getting older, because even if there are challenges along the way, you’ll adapt, and you’ll get through them.” All I would have to do is live by this one rule:  my relationships with other people are the most important thing in my life, and as long as I am true to that, I’ll be ok.

The journey of making this record has been full of challenges. It has coincided with a particularly confusing time in my life and, in the process of making it, I have done a lot of questioning of myself and my purpose in this world. In many ways, I have failed to live by my one rule. I have taken certain people for granted.  I haven’t always given my relationships the energy and attention they need and deserve. I haven’t been present enough to enjoy their gifts and be grateful.

This song is a reminder. It is a reminder that, despite all my failures, all of my fears, all of the noise in my head and in the world that is distracting me and causing me pain and anxiety,  all I have to do is remember my one rule. And I need to believe in it with my entire being.

LYRICS:

Ten thousand voices on the waterway
They never call to say goodbye
Another day has left the world
With only memory deep inside

Ten thousand voices on the waterway
Some will fall and some will rise
All fearing for themselves
What’s waiting there beyond the skies

Hold fast to love
Hold fast like the river go down
Hold fast my love
Hold fast but let it meander
Now pass the cup
Drink deep from the river way down
You pass the love
Hold fast but let it meander

Ten thousand voices scream the battlecry
They never stop to wonder why
Another day has left the world
With only suffering as our guide

Hold fast to love
Hold fast like the river go down
Hold fast my love
Hold fast but let it meander
Now pass the cup
Drink deep from the river way down
You pass the love
Hold fast so you can remember

“Our unbreakable bond with the natural world is the legacy of 50,000 generations of the Pleistocene - it lies buried in our genes. It might now be covered over by 500 generations of civilization, but it is not destroyed. For nature is where we came from and evolved, it is where the human imagination formed and took flight, not in cities, in front of computers or in cars.”

- Michael McCarthy, (The Moth Snowstorm: Nature and Joy)
