Wherever We Go

LYRICS:

Wherever we go, birds in the wind will fly
The places we know, dropped in the belly of the sky
Tuning in time the strings of our past lives
Closing our eyes, the end is the ceaseless sigh

The Well

LYRICS:

All of my days
Working the well, working the well
Nobody knows
You couldn’t tell, you couldn’t tell
Where is the end of my rope?
It’s in my hands, in my own two hands
In my head and in my hope
It’s where I stand, it’s where I stand

Up from the bottom, up from the bottom
It’s coming up from the bottom, up from the bottom

I am alone
On a garden path, on a garden path
Trimming the hedges
They grow so fast, you know they grow so fast
And all of my nights
Working the well, working the well
So many secrets
I’ll never tell, no I’ll never tell

Up from the bottom, up from the bottom
It’s coming up from the bottom, up from the bottom
I bring it up from the bottom, up from the bottom
I bring it up from the bottom, up from the bottom

BONUS CONTENT

When I have an idea for a song, I like to get it recorded as soon as possible so I don't forget it.  Most of the time, that means I'll use my phone as the recording device.  The audio quality isn't great, but that isn't the point -- it's just a sketch, after all.  Here's an "audio journal" of the early writing stages of the "The Well."  There are definitely some ideas in here that didn't quite make it into the final version...

This is a recording of my full band performing "Wherever We Go" and "The Well." The two songs are intended to flow into each other, so we created a musical bridge using a delayed-out keyboard and some lap-steel guitar swells.  I really like how the additional instruments bring another dimension to these songs.
